Our Approach to Indigenous Rights: Recognition, Respect & Collaboration

Located adjacent to Bawating, The Place of the Rapids, Algoma Steel recognizes the importance of respecting the rights, traditions, and lands of Indigenous peoples. Our approach is grounded in the principles of recognition, respect, and collaboration, ensuring that the voices of Indigenous peoples are heard and valued in all aspects of our operations. We are dedicated to advancing reconciliation through meaningful actions, and we remain committed to strengthening our partnerships with Indigenous communities to build better lives for future generations.

Land Acknowledgement

Algoma Steel Inc. acknowledges that we operate on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Anishinaabe People, specifically within the Robinson-Huron Treaty territory. We recognize the enduring presence and contributions of the Batchewana and Garden River First Nations, as well as the Métis People. We are committed to recognizing and respecting these communities, their histories, and their ongoing connection to this land.

Engagement & Collaboration

We actively engage with Indigenous communities to understand their needs and concerns, collaborating with Indigenous leaders and organizations to ensure respectful and mutually beneficial relationships.

Our board members, executives, and employees have actively participated in training on cultural sensitivity and Indigenous rights, as well as attended conferences dedicated to Indigenous partnerships and reconciliation.

Policy Implementation

We include Indigenous rights considerations in our policies and governance frameworks and are committed to ongoing education and capacity-building within the organization to support Indigenous rights.

Future Plans

While we currently have a number of measures in place to help us both understand and support Indigenous rights, our commitment to the Indigenous community is permanent and ongoing.

We are in the process of developing formal programs and initiatives designed to strengthen our partnerships with local Indigenous communities and advance reconciliation. These efforts will help ensure our continued support and foster meaningful relationships for generations to come.
